The Old Khmer Kingdom
Siem Reap, known among Thais as "Siemrath", is a world-class travel destination, where millions of travellers visit each other, topping the number of visitors to Phnom Penh, Cambodia's capital. Undoubtedly, the powerful magnet that draws globetrotters from everywhere are the more than 200 stone castles, to which Siem Reap is the gateway. Angkor Wat, Angkor Thom, Phnom Bakheng and other magnificent temples are mandatory destinations. That said, other activities like a boat tour on Tonle Sap Lake, a night out on Pub Street, the delicate traditional dance and a walk through the old market are also not to be missed on a trip to Siem Reap.
Must-See Highlights and Activities
"See Angkor Wat and die," wrote English writer Arnold Toynbee, urging travellers to see for themselves the grandeur of the gigantic structure. Angkor Wat is not only famous for its sheer size, but also the fact that each of its stones carries years and years of interesting history. The capital, the religious centre and other stories of Cambodia's first UNESCO World Heritage site need to be discovered only by you. Angkor Thom is another must see place. It used to be a capital city, before the Kingdom declined its status, so there are many temples and royal palaces within Angkor Thom.
The highlight is Bayontemple which was built with the layers of laterite stone and surrounded with stone figures on each side to guard the site.
Ta Phrom Temple
Ta Phrom Temple is not far from Angkor Thom and was used as a location to film Tomb Raider, due to its distinctive features of the trees growing out of the ruins, covering the temple.
Psar Chaa (The Old Market)
Take a stroll in the old market that was founded during the French colonial era and you might mistake it as a walk through a European city. The merchandise ranges from local fresh fish, dried fish and smoked fish from Tonle Sap Lake to fresh vegetables and fruits. For souvenirs, silk and carved wood are among the popular items.
Tonle Sap Lake
An amazing boat tour on Asia's largest and one of the world's largest lakes will take you through floating communities, houses, churches and a government building. If you wake up early and take the first trip, the magnificent sight of sunrise in the middle of the lake is an invaluable bonus. Sit on the boat and see the locals' way of life, in particular the fishermen who either fish or punt their boats in the lake. Freshwater fish are abundant in the lake and make a great souvenir.
During the day, the top of Phnom Bakheng castle provides a complete view of Yasodharapura Kingdom as well as the top of Angkor Wat. In the evening, as the sun slowly sets, the views are also as stunning. Climbing up to the spot requires some energy, but is well worth the energy.
For a non-capital city, Siem Reap's nightlife is far from dull. A short strip is filled with liveliness from the restaurants, bars, pubs and souvenir shops that attract streams of visitors every night.
The Apsara Dance
A traditional Cambodian dance portraying the 1,600 Apsaras, or angels, carved on the stone walls of Angkor Wat is performed by talented dancers. The delicate poses and movements, together with the mid-tempo beat, make the show memorable.
You will never go hungry in Siem Reap, as the city has a lengthy list of delicious cuisine of different styles, from food carts on the street to luxurious restaurants. The food, however, is not hugely different from Thai food when it comes to taste, only less spicy. Instead of chillies, Cambodians use pepper. The food also is tinted with Chinese, Vietnamese and French influences.
Among the popular dishes are rice wrapped in lotus leaves, Cambodian-style steamed curried fish wrapped in banana leaves, noodles, soup and sukiyaki. Fried frog with garlic and deep fried fish are also must-try items.
